Ski Season in Park City Begins November 22

Although weather conditions can cause this to change, at the time of this writing, all signs point to the resorts opening on Friday, November 22, coinciding with the holiday season and ensuring that your visit will be filled with magic! Thanksgiving comes a little later this year, taking place on November 28, making visitors very thankful for a ski vacation in Park City. If you are going to be here on opening day, however, preferring to spend the holiday at home with extended family, there will be plenty of fun to be had, beginning with complimentary donuts, coffee, and live music being played on opening day.

Snow Globe Stroll, November 22 – January 5

It won’t matter if you are visiting the week before Thanksgiving, the week of Thanksgiving, or anytime in the month of December, because you won’t be able to miss the Snow Globe Stroll that begins on November 22 and continues all the way into the new year, offering seven bigger than life-sized snow globes, each offering a display that coincides with the Christmas song being played. As you are exploring the magic of the snow globes, you can also be getting in some last-minute holiday shopping, checking out the Main Street Christmas tree, and posting a letter to Santa in our official Santa Mailbox located on Main Street. Offering a hotline directly to Santa’s workshop, your littles will not be able to keep their excitement to themselves when mailing their very important letter!

Canyons Village Tree Lighting Ceremony, November 29th

If you are here for Thanksgiving, however, the Canyons Village Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place on November 29th and offers an exciting array of holiday activities. Starting at 3 PM, the shops of Pendry Plaza and Canyons Village will offer some wonderful sales, encouraging guests to get started on their long list of gifts needing to be purchased, and then at 4 PM, the holiday music begins. (We dare you to try and not sing along to the carols you know and love!) From 4:30 to 5:45, the biggest holiday celebrity of all, Santa Claus, will appear for photos and Christmas requests, and at 6 PM, the tree will light up the night. Immediately after the tree is lit, the skies will light up with a colorful display of fireworks and your Christmas will be brighter because it began right here in Canyons Village!

Holiday Shows at the Egyptian Theater, December 5 through December 25th

The historic Egyptian Theater, located at 328 Main Street is the center of holiday performances throughout the month of December, offering live shows that include “Christmas with the Celts” (December 5-8), the eagerly awaited “Park City’s Holiday Spectacular and Singalong” (December 13-22), and one of our Park City Christmas traditions, an evening with Kurt Bestor, celebrating the holiday in ways only this composer can (December 23-25). We really don’t consider it Christmas in Park City until Kurt Bestor comes to town, and once you catch his performance, we think you will understand why!

Celebrating Homes: Holiday Tree Show, 4001 Kearns Boulevard, December 6 and 7

Because you will still want to get as much time as you can in on the slopes, this next event takes place over 2 days, starting at 1 PM and ending at 8 PM on December 6th and starting at 10 AM and ending at 5 PM on December 7. Costing nothing to attend, Celebrating Homes: Holiday Tree Show is sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, features over two dozen trees decorated by local businesses, designers, organizations, and community groups, as well as a selection of menorahs, gingerbread houses, and other holiday symbols. Kids’ activities will bring a sparkle to your children’s eyes, and a pop-up holiday boutique will more than likely add an extra shine to yours!

Give Her the Gift of Relaxation

It may sound sexist, but in most households across the world, it is mom that is responsible for the lion’s share of kitchen duties, but I Love Park City thinks this year could look very different. Many of our local restaurants will be open on this most festive day of the year, ready and eager to engage in their two passions, making food and feeding hungry people, with the restaurants listed below doing so extraordinarily well!

Flanagan’s on Main, 438 Main Street

Everyone has a different idea of what makes a Christmas meal special, and if you think that the casual and welcoming environs of an Irish pub are what you need to celebrate, Flanagan’s on Main invites you to check out what’s for dinner! Offering a special three-course holiday menu on Christmas Eve AND Christmas Day, a dinner here is a gift that is unwrapped with every bite. There’s no word yet if the menu will be different from last year’s, which featured seafood, lamb, and a delicious strawberry bread pudding for dessert.

KITA, 2417 W High Mountain Road

When traveling, we always try to include at least one special occasion restaurant on our itinerary, and the Japanese American inspired dishes served at KITA may just make you choose it for your Christmas meal. Offering a three-course menu on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, this special restaurant is a relatively new one on the Park City landscape, but after tasting last year’s offerings we can’t wait to see what they provide this year!

Glitretind Restaurant, 7700 Stein Way

Traditions ground us, and the Christmas dinner buffet served at Glitretind Restaurant is one of our most delicious ones. Offering everything from ceviche to roasted elk, we suggest that diners wear their stretchy pants and pace themselves when dining on this meal. You want to taste a little of everything, and we would hate to see you have to stop dining before you have, especially when you see the superb selection of desserts that are just waiting to be sampled!

The Best of Both Worlds

Not everyone is excited about the idea of battling snow and traffic, but if you don’t want to cook, you may think there is no alternative. Fortunately, we at I Love Park City have done the research, and the places we have listed below allow guests to order takeout and enjoy the meal at home in front of roaring fires!

Saltbox Eatery and Catering, 1782 Prospector Avenue

It may be cold outside on Christmas Day, but you will be warm, cozy, and devouring a Christmas dinner in Park City from the Saltbox inside, so you won’t mind a bit. Offering an a la carte menu that includes prime rib or orange cranberry glazed sea bass, each order is packed with reheating instructions, allowing diners to enjoy the taste and smell of from scratch cooking without any of the muss or fuss that generally accompanies the preparation of a big feast. Orders must be placed at least 72 hours in advance, so set a reminder in your phone today.

Whole Foods Market, 6598 N Landmark Drive

Restaurants aren’t the only businesses offering precooked meals and Whole Foods is the perfect example. Offering a huge selection of catered meals, including ones for the Jewish high holidays, you may end up spending a lot more time exploring their options than you do actually devouring the delicious meals. Orders must be placed at least 48 hours in advance, so if you forget to order from Saltbox, you have a backup plan!

A Kick Start to the Festivities

Just like at home, when the decorations come out, the holiday officially begins and because we are so excited to start celebrating, ours come out earlier than in most places, beginning with the annual lighting of the Christmas tree in Junction Commons. Held on November 22 this year. The ceremony starts at 4, offering holiday themed activities for the kids, steaming hot cocoa and food trucks just bursting with the most delicious of stick to your ribs foods, and accompanying all the antics going on, holiday music that we know you won’t be able to keep from singing along. Then with a flick of a switch, the dark night will light up as the centerpiece of this fun celebration comes to life. Thousands of colorful lights will bring joy to all who witness this beautiful mountain scene, and although the ceremony only happens once, the tree will be lit every night through the new year, allowing travelers to enjoy its beauty whenever their holiday escape to Park City occurs.

Main Street Snow Globe Stroll, November 22 through January 5

We love our traditions in Park City, but we also love to do things differently than other places, and our Main Street Snow Globe Stroll, held November 22 through January 5, is the perfect example. Encouraging guests and residents to stroll along the streets of historic downtown Park City, dipping in and out of the colorful shops finding beautiful gifts for everyone on their lists, and enjoying the sparkling beauty of seven life-sized snow globes that will be resting on sidewalks and plaza along the way. Yes, we said life-sized, and these massive snow globes are each created to represent a different holiday song; “Last Christmas,” “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Let it Snow,” and “Happy Holiday” are all reflected in these colorful snow globes. And because winter in Park City is going to be cold, sipping hot cocoa in commemorative mugs sold by Red Banjo Pizza will help you keep toasty warm in the sweetest of ways.

While You’re Here

The snow globes are definitely a crowd pleaser, but they aren’t the only lights you will be able to see during your Park City holiday adventures. The historic downtown area is beautiful at any time of the year, but when decorated for Christmas, with lights and displays and the Main Street Christmas tree alight with its own colorful trimmings, you may feel like you have stepped into a scene from a Currier & Ives Christmas card. The city has even made special arrangements with the North Pole, installing a mailbox that goes straight to Santa himself, ensuring that your kiddos will be able to make their wishes heard.

Menorah Parade, on Main Street, December 26

The beauty of Hannukah is not ignored in our mountain town and on the second day of Hannukah the Menorah Parade takes to the streets once again. A procession of cars lead the way, all decorated to reflect this most meaningful of holidays, ending with a building side Menorah being lit for the season. Even if you don’t celebrate the holiday, the serenity of this wonderful parade will enhance your holiday celebrations.

Park City Wanderings

Just as in your own home town, the neighborhoods of Park City will be decorated with Christmas lights and displays and as neighbors and friends try their best to outdo each other, you and your family will be the winners.
