The family vacation is one of the most important family traditions, but it can also be the most difficult for everyone to enjoy. The vast differences in age combined with the strong and independent personalities almost always results in at least one or more of your family members feeling bored, angry, left out, or unconsidered, but that is rarely an issue when you take the family to Park City, especially over the Park City Utah Memorial Day Weekend. We at I Love Park City have created this guide to all the ways you can enjoy family-friendly fun in Park City over the long holiday weekend, beginning and ending with a stay in our holiday hideaways!
Horseback Riding with Red Pine Adventures, 2050 White Pine Canyon Road
What’s a trip to the great Southwest without the opportunity to experience a fun horseback ride? Fortunately, that isn’t a question you will have to answer, as Red Pine Adventures offers horseback rides through the Park City countryside after the snow has melted. Offering over 1000 acres of private land, their guides are friendly and knowledgeable, the horses are well mannered and so sweet you will feel as if you have discovered a new best friend, and your kiddos will feel as if heaven on earth has been found. This activity is for riders 8 years and older, so it isn’t a toddler adventure, so keep that in mind, but if you fit their guidelines, the hour or hour and a half trail rides offered may end up being your favorite family-friendly adventure!
Heber Valley Railroad, 450 S 6th W in Heber City
This next family-friendly activity involves both a road trip AND a rail trip, with the road trip being short, Heber City is located just 17 minutes outside of Park City and the rail trip not being long enough. The Heber Valley Railroad offers two-hour tours of the stunning Utah countryside, offering theme nights aboard historic trains that have been restored to their original glory, including steam locomotives from the very early 1900s and a variety of passenger cars dating back to 1919, this adventure is an exciting one. The Monday Night Train is highly recommended, offering a special family friendly adventure, one that start with an Old West gunfight (occurring before boarding at 6:40 PM) and features sing-a-longs and the occasional dance party. The family pass costs $72 for up to 6 guests ages 2+. Kids 1 and under are invited to participate in this fun event at no additional cost.
A Day in the Park
A day at the park takes on added meaning when enjoyed with family and City Park, located at 1400 Sullivan Road, and offering a playground, picnic tables, sports courts, and even a skateboard park, should your teen have brought along his favorite board. The weather in May is still slightly chilly, but the flowers will be blooming, the sun will shine brightly on park goers, and as you watch your tiniest travelers scramble all over the colorful jungle gym, you won’t be able to think of any other place you would want to be. City Park is also often the site of concerts and special events, and although we haven’t read anything that suggests Memorial Day Weekend will be one of those times, there’s always hope!
Ice Cream at Java Cow Coffee and Ice Cream, 402 Main Street
Park City Utah Memorial Day Weekend is often considered the kick-off to summer fun, and what better way to celebrate the season than with an ice cream cone shared with family? Offering handmade ice cream made onsite daily, parents can feel good about this delicious treat knowing it is an all-natural one and if ice cream isn’t your favorite, coffee and baked goods will help satisfy your sweet tooth. Also serving milkshakes and ice cream cakes, we really can’t think of a better way to enjoy your family on a beautiful spring or summer day.
